yaya for raya

We attended the Miss Trannyshack 2006 pageant at the Regency ballroom which was a generally fun evening and featured some great performances in between long speeches of gratitude to the various sponsors of the evening. There was a lot of thanking of sponsors. But, I guess all that extra support helped keep the price down to a reasonable 25 dollars with a bar that served 8 dollar drinks.

I watched the first bartender to make me an 8 dollar drink give a 2.5 second pour of Vodka. As we paid, I said "well I hope they're strong!" to which he responded "Oh yeah. I pour em how I like em." Which apparently means he likes drinks that are watery and flavorless. Needless to say, we switched bartenders for subsequent orders.

Raya Light, the winner, delivered the most conceptual, creepy, and transcendent performance, which seemed to combine the tales of Little Bo Peep and Riding Hood and was really quite stunning. She was the clear winner. We felt the 80's medley from Poison Ivy, with an incredible back up dance team, also deserved at least a runner up, but she was shut out. Boo. Coco Canal, who in an alter ego worked on Hunter Gatherers, retired her crown in a dramatic life-ending number. Lady Bunny, a drag legend, put on a great show. Lady Miss Kier, from Dee Lite, um, well she also performed.

In the 20 minute dance break before they announced the winner, the DJ put on perhaps the most horrendous trance dance music I have ever heard which managed to clear the room and end all hope for goodness in the world. I am a huge enjoyer of the electronic music, just not the type that makes you feel like you're dancing in a underground machine room construction site of death. Fortunately the speaker went out nearby. I was grateful that the sound system that had good judgment.

A pleasant surprise

Stranger Than Fiction! It's less of a cute comedy than the previews made it out to be and I found it to be that wonderful mix of stark, subtle, and strangely touching. And, not to get too nerdy, but has anyone read Niebla by Miguel de Unamuno? Reminded me of that.

I was crying at then end. OK, so I cried during Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants but don't let that dissuade you.

Just had to shout it out.

You're gonna love me!

OK I'm listening to that right now, in anticipation for the upcoming release of Dreamgirls. I think Jennifer Hudson is going to knock it out of the park.

Other weekend thoughts:
  • I have downloaded the Borat theme song for my ringtone. The movie--well it's a movie that justifies why we should still go out to the theater and watch movies. Right?
  • I sleep more when there's less sun.
  • The deck of the building next to us, which is adjacent to the "guest bedroom/office" has been torn apart and is being rebuilt. The sounds of guitar music being practiced (the newest song being practiced daily is a catchy ditty called 'you're full of shit.' That's the chorus.) and loud phone conversations that go on for hours have been replaced by nail guns and assorted construction ruckus. I'm not sure which is worse.
  • Martha Stewart is on TV in Paris right now. I guess the bracelet is off!
  • Am enjoying Seven Swans by Sufjan Stevens. It's a nice contrast to the state work.
That's all I have for you right now.

caught

A mouse was in the "tip trap" this morning and Mark has just left to release it into its natural habit. Well, a new natural habitat where it won't poop on our desk and pillows anymore.

This was possibly the second mouse we have captured. I was convinced the other night that something was in there, though when I opened the portal for release, either the thing shot out there so fast that I couldn't see it or it was all a mirage.

We are hopeful that's it for the mouse family living in our apartment but we will keep the traps out for a while longer. The humane "tip traps" seem to have worked all right, especially with the combined bait of peanut butter and cheese. All mousetraps available at Cole hardware are convinced that mice love peanut butter more than anything else. Our snaps traps, 2 of which are also out, have been highly unsuccessful in catching anything other than my finger once, causing me to embarrassingly cuss out a piece of wood.

A new approach

non stop election coverage begins NOW

just kidding.

a few thoughts so far
  • Where are all these remote places that have huge lines for the polls due to glitches and errors? Oh, Denver and Ohio.
  • Republican campaigning has led me to wonder: Do terrorists support gay marriage?
  • I wish the San Francisco Board of Supervisors would stop putting so many propositions on the ballot. It went to K! How the hell am I supposed to know whether chain stores should be required to get a conditional use permit before they are allowed to open up in a neighborhood commercial district?!?! HEY, SUPERVISORS, I'LL ANSWER THAT IF YOU TELL ME HOW TO END MY NEXT PLAY. And make it brilliant, please. Measure K, interestingly, just asked the city of San Francisco if we think Seniors should have housing. THIS IS A WASTE OF TIME! I also am not a fan of the Chris Daly ad with him in a helmet. Well, OK, it's kind of cute. Nor am I pleased that SFGATE now has a Michela Alioto-Pier sponsored view of SF Bay before I read my article about Britney Spears getting divorced. I am also not a fan of Matt Gonzalez calling me to endorse a candidate. for school board. Thanks, but no thanks, quitter.
  • writing that last paragraph got me very riled up.
  • I wrote in my mother for Governor of California. I think she would do quite a good job.

oh really now

I mean come on. Such a cliche.

hello november

I welcome November. I welcome it with brisk autumnal energy. San Francisco got cold this week. "Fall-like" as they call it out here (because it isn't really fall out here like you east coast people have with your leaves and shit).

Halloween happened yesterday and instead of stabbings in the Castro, people got shot. I only quickly breezed through the official event on my way to another house and it seemed to be about as packed and crazy as ever. But, definitely a significant lack of the usual merriment than in the past. Very few people were taking the free candy I was offering, even with my helpful sign that said "Free Candy." Plus, fun was perhaps muted by the 500 cops and the "search and destroy" funnel entrances where liquor was confiscated (though apparently guns were OK). And perhaps the whole event sucks now due to the fact that nobody who actually lives in the Castro seems to want to participate in the event anymore. See that's what happens when gays get married: They become no fun! Just kiddin, gays. But, come on

There were definitely too many people NOT in costume. And no, kids, wearing your hoodie over your head does not count as a costume. The Mission district, however was PACKED with the most adorably costumed children. We still never get trick or treaters at our apartment door, though that does not stop us from buying several bags of candy.
