Once again, my blogging duties have lagged. I'm sort of sorry.
I'm in the midst of a busy couple months...two readings coming up, one of TIC in New York (but it's private) and one workshop/reading of my newest play, BOB, down at
South Coast Rep! They commissioned the darn thing and this is its first stab at scrutiny. I've already begun rewriting the draft from the previous reading and am hoping to implement a lot of ideas and changes before this one. It should be fun, raw, and grand. And I'll be there!
Here is the official press release from SCR:
South Coast Repertory’s 2009-2010 NewSCRipts Season Opens with BOB
COSTA MESA, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2009)— Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s play BOB kicks off South Coast Repertory’s latest NewSCRipts series Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Commissioned by SCR, BOB is the 109th play to receive a staged reading as part of SCR’s venerable play reading program. Shelley Butler will direct.
BOB tells the life story of Bob, whose mother gave birth to him in a White Castle bathroom on Valentine’s Day, then abandoned him to his fate. A restaurant employee, convinced by a fortune cookie that she will one day be mother to a great man, takes him in as her own. Thus begins a most unconventional childhood, followed by an equally unconventional adulthood. Bob’s quest to fulfill his adopted mother’s dream for him sends him down a difficult and lonely path, as he moves from town to town and job to job in search of the place where he belongs. Happiness, he eventually discovers, is elusive, but not out of reach.
Nachtrieb is a San Francisco-based playwright whose works include boom (which just topped Theatre Communications Group’s list of most-produced plays in 2009-2010) Hunter Gatherers, Colorado, T.I.C. (Trenchcoat In Common) and Multiplex. His work has been seen Off-Broadway and across the country at Ars Nova, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Seattle Repertory, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Cleveland Public Theatre, Brown/Trinity Playwrights Rep, the Bailiwick Theatre, Wellfleet Harbor Actor's Theatre, Dad's Garage, and in the Bay Area at Encore Theatre, Killing My Lobster, Magic Theatre, Impact Theatre and the Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Hunter Gatherers received the 2007 American Theatre Critics Association/Steinberg New Play Award for best new play to premiere outside of New York and the 2007 Will Glickman Prize for best new play in the Bay Area. He is a resident playwright at the Playwrights Foundation, San Francisco. He holds a degree in theater and biology from Brown and an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University.
The annual NewSCRipts series of three Monday evening play readings by emerging and established playwrights was launched in 1985 as a way to bring the audience into the process of creating new work. After each public reading, which take place on the Argyros Stage, audience members engage in lively exchanges with the playwright and become active participants in the play’s development, providing invaluable feedback for the writer. Plays selected for the NewSCRipts series have earned six Pulitzer Prize nominations with Margaret Edson’s Wit winning the prize in 1999.
South Coast Repertory’s NewSCRipts series of play readings is generously underwritten by Elaine J. Weinberg.
TICKETS to the NewSCRipts reading of BOB can be purchased online at www.scr.org, by phone at (714) 708-5555 or in person at the SCR box office. NewSCRipts tickes are $12 each and include audience discussions with the playwright and dramaturg.
